Joy mining are a global leader in the supply of underground mining systems and services and they employ 4,500 people worldwide. Their headquarters is in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, USA.

PDu were initially approached by Joy’s UK design headquarters to redesign the existing roof support control. Joy were attracted to PDu due to our high level of expertise in design for plastics and the depth and range in our portfolio. The existing control enclosure was a stainless steel fabrication and had presented several problems in manufacturing including cost and tolerance build ups leading to failure in the field. The commercial cost of downtime in a mine is $1000 a minute so reliability is a key factor.

Not only is the environment extreme it is also safety critical so the resulting specification for this work was a major challenge. The unit had to seal to IP 68 as well as surviving rigorous environmental and drop testing. The end solution not only satisfied the high level of specification but it offered Joy a solution with major commercial benefits including cost savings which saw the entire capitol investment recouped in minimal time.

The success of this project not only led to more projects in the UK we were also selected by Joy USA to work directly with the U.S team on some key product developments which has strengthened their position as a global leader.
